INDIE WEB

IndieWeb, strictly speaking, is an org & community of people who host websites with the goal of providing an easy outlet for freedom of expression (as opposed to big social media platforms, who tend to censor, mine and sell your data, and exploit users). When I think of indie web though, I consider it as the non-commercial side of the internet, which extends to anything that democratizes access to read & write information.

Some projects are more or less well known than others, but all have similar and important goals. Wikipedia is easily one of the greatest things humans have ever created1. Orgs like IndieWeb and neocities do a lot by freely hosting websites and encouraging individuality. Platforms like Are.na keep the lights on with subscriptions rather than ads and predatory algorithms; and finally, webrings promote discoverability among similar websites without relying on large platforms2. Each are examples of things I find inspiring and important to the world at large.
